Fake Functional Group Names to Trip You Up

1.  amino ketone – should be “amide”

2.  ketoamine – should be “carboxamide”

3.  hydroxyketone – these are ketones flanked by a hydroxyl group either in the alpha or beta position, but they are NEVER attached directly on the main carbon.

Notice how they involve alpha & beta.

Notice how they involve alpha & beta carbons only. Not the main carbonyl carbon.

Note: the above wikipedia entry is contested by the American Chemistry Association who states that “[A] hydroxyl attached to a carbonyl group is a carboxylic acid. Period (p5 ACS Organic Chemistry Official Guide).”
